Press release
Galería Aires is pleased to present Taejoong Kim and Paul Rho’s two-person exhibition, Fotograficos with the gallery. Opening on Saturday, January 27, and on view through Friday, February 9, the exhibition will feature two Korean photographers’ curated selection of works.
Fotograficos, the title of this show, merges two young Korean photo-based artists to show how they chose to use photography in their ways. In this exhibition, Kim and Rho’s different approaches to the camera distinguish each other and push the boundaries of photography, leaving the audience to think about how contemporary photography has its role in art.
Paul Rho is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York. With a background spanning photography, video, sculpture, and performance, he explores transforming photographic materials into sculptures. Rho studied at the University of Arts London, earned a photography degree at the School of Visual Arts, and a master’s at Columbia University. His work focuses on chemical reactions in photography, distancing from digital interpretations. Influenced by personal experiences and traditional Korean forms, his approach involves folding, sewing, and pottery. Having lived in various countries for two decades, Rho is now navigating and embracing his roots in New York.
Taejoong Kim has experimented on the crashes between clear rules and vague circumstances for exploring the new possibility of photography with video installations. He presented solo exhibitions at Goethe-Institut(Seoul) , Space776(New York), Earport(Duisburg) and Laznia-CCA(Gdansk). He is the recipient of grants and awards from Foam Fotografiemuseum(Amsterdam), The Jewish Museum(New York), Darb1718(Cairo) and The Museum of Photography, Seoul(Seoul), among others. Taejoong Kim received an M.F.A. from Columbia University and a B.F.A. in photography from Chung-Ang University. He lives and works in New York City.
